REFLECTION
Reflecting back on the entirety of INLUSTRATIO, it is almost impossible to contain it within a single post (hence why this blog exists, I presume). Focusing on myself and myself alone, I have to say that I am incredibly proud of the work I carried out throughout the process of creating this film; I was not only the editor, but also the colour grader, sound person, and even partially a production designer and a temporary director.

As for my most important contribution: the editing. The circumstances around my work were not the most favourable, especially considering the equipment that was available for me to use, but I believe I still managed to create something great. Without the director there there were plenty of creative liberties that I could take, and although it was often rather difficult, I think it helped the project altogether. Sometimes pacing was challenging to figure out, to know where to cut (or where not to cut, to paraphrase Murch) and maintain the emotional effect of the film. The limited amount of footage I was working with did not make it any easier, and sometimes I do wish I had more shots to choose from, but I tried to make best with what I had been given. Additionally, I believe that if I had been more familiar with the software (which is definitely on me), the overall quality of the project could have reached new heights – most of it, despite striving for arthouse, was a result of pretty basic techniques. That simplicity may work now, but in the future, I will definitely try to elevate the work I do (and hopefully have the circumstances to reach my goals).

In terms of audio recording, I feel less strongly about the quality of the work I contributed. I understand why sound crews are so highly sought for – it is incredibly difficult to get it right, and if it is not 100% right it bothers people way more than any visual issues. Despite trials, the overall unfamiliarity with the equipment I was using definitely impacted the quality of the project altogether. Thankfully the music helped remedy most of the issues, but if I am ever to be a member of the sound crew, I will certainly have to educate myself much more than I did in this instance.

INLUSTRATIO, both as a film and as a project, is nowhere near perfect – however, despite all of its tribulations and complications, it was completed on time, and to a standard that we can all genuinely take pride in. I am very thankful for Patryk’s dedication to the project (less so with other group members) and I hope this experience allows us to create more fantastic work in the future.
